Martial arts equipment FAQs

Q: I really want to learn karate to beat up a bully at school. Will karate help me do this?
A: Maybe, but that would be negating to the whole practice of karate. Martial arts are all about self-defense, not about revenge. The best things you’ll gain from karate are exercise and self-confidence; most instructors will say that resorting to physical combat is the last resort during an argument.

Q: What’s the dan system?
A: The dan system determines how advanced a student is depending on the color of belt they wear. Beginners wear white belts and experts wear black belts, but there are many variations within that spectrum depending on what you’re practicing.

Q: What’s a gi?
A: A gi is another name for karate uniform. Uniforms are the most basic equipment for practicing in a dojo. They are often made from cotton because it is sturdy and breathable.
