Lexicon within Heiho To Jutsu:

Concepts and Terms:

  • Aiuchi - Mutual striking or cutting down 
  • Battojutsu - Sword-drawing art / historical term
  • Chuden - Middle
  • Gedan - Lower
  • Getta - Wooden Sandals
  • Haori - Short-sleeve jacket worn over kimono
  • Heiho - Tactical strategies
  • Hidari - Left
  • Himo - Belting of the hakama
  • Hyoshi - Timing, of techniques against opponents
  • Jodan - High
  • Joiuchi - Orders from above, as in to execute a rival
  • Joseki - Dojo's Upper Side Wall
  • Jyuban - Sleeveless undergarment worn under a kimono
  • Kamiza - Dojo's High or Shrine Place
  • Kata dori - Shoulder grab
  • Kata dori ryote - Grabbing both shoulders
  • Kata dori, men tsuki - Shoulder grab, punch to the face
  • Katate dori - One hand grabbing one hand/wrist
  • Kawagane - Harder (higher carbon) steel used for blade's sides
  • Kenjutsu - Swordsmanship art, especially in regards to fencing techniques
  • Kimono - Traditional Japanese full length garment
  • Kiri-ma - Cutting distance, opponent is within one step distance
  • Kissaki San Zen - Final drawing stage as the sword is about to leave saya
  • Kitae - Folding the steel bar during forging
  • Kubi shime - Choke 
  • Ma ai - Combative distance between opponents
  • Mae - Front
  • Men Tsuki - Face Strike, straight thrust with tsukagashia
  • Migi - Right
  • Morote dori - Two hands grabbing one hand/wrist
  • Ryoute dori - Two hands grabbing two hands/wrists
  • Saya dori - Grabbing the sword's scabbard
  • Sen - Initiative, as in moving as a reaction to opponent's attack
  • Shigane - Softer (lower carbon content) steel in blade's core
  • Shimoseki - Dojo's Lower Side Wall
  • Shirasaya - Wooden "display" saya and handle, used for storage 
  • Shu Ha Ri - Obey - Break - Separate
  • Tabi - Sock slippers
  • Taijutsu - "Body Arts" - Unarmed self-defense methods  
  • Tamahagane - Raw steel that can make the body of the blade
  • Tantojutsu - Dagger arts
  • Tatuske - Cord used to tie up kimono sleeves
  • Tsuka dori - Grabbing the sword handle
  • Ushiro - Rear
  • Yaki-Ire - The hardening of the steel by heating and quencing blade
  • Yokomen uchi - Sideways strike to the head

Sword Anatomy:

  • Boshi - Tempered part of kissaki
  • Fuchigane - Collar at fore end of hilt
  • Fumabari - Tapering of the blade's width from the machi to the kissaki
  • Ha - Cutting edge
  • Habaki - Blade collar
  • Ha-machi - Notch on edge before tang
  • Hi - Groove of blade
  • Kissaki - Point of the sword's blade
  • Koigichi - Scabbard's opening
  • Kojiri - Scabbard's end
  • Koshirae - Mounting / Fittings on the sword
  • Koshi-sori - Sword's curve near tang, bottom third of blade
  • Kurikata - Scabbard's cord hole
  • Mei - Signature of swordsmith on the tang
  • Mekugi - Retaining Peg
  • Mekugi Ana - Hole in tang for retaining peg
  • Menuki - Ornaments on hilt / grippings
  • Monouchi - First third of the blade from the kissaki
  • Moto Haba - Blade's width at the machi
  • Mune - Back (spine) of blade
  • Mune-machi - Notch on back edge before tang
  • Nagasa - Measure of blade's length from the kissaki to the mune machi
  • Nakago - Tang of Blade
  • Nakago-jiri - End of tang
  • Sageo - Cord attached to scabbard
  • Saki Haba - Blade's width at the yokote
  • Saki-sori - Sword's curve in top third of the blade
  • Same - Wrapping of the sword's hilt / rayskin
  • Saya - Scabbard
  • Seppa - Spaces on either side of the tsuba
  • Shinogi - Ridge Line
  • Shinogi-ji - Surface above groove
  • Sori - Curvature of blade
  • Tori-i-sori - Sword's curve's near the blade's center
  • Tsuba - Sword's hand guard
  • Tsuka - Sword's handle
  • Tsukagashia - End of sword's handle
  • Tsuka-Ito - Braid wrapping at end of hilt
  • Yakiba - Temper line
  • Yasuri Mei - File marks on the tang
  • Yokote - Short transverse ridgeline of the kissaki
