Iaijutsu
"Iaijutsu," also referred
historically as Batto jutsu,
is the art of drawing and cutting with a Japanese sword. Iaijutsu
techniques evolved so that a samurai could regain or
take the initiative against his opponent(s) from an inherent
tactical disadvantage - his sword being in its scabbard.
Iaijutsu was often focused on non-battlefield scenarios,
such as in social settings or encounters in the streets, alleys or
on trails. Any threat would need to be rapidly, even
instinctively, identified and responded to immediately.
